The paper aims to illustrate the use of Bible by historians of twelfth century (especially Guibert of Nogent, Raymond d’Aguilers, Robert the Monk) in order to understand - and legitimate - the bloody sack of Jerusalem (1099). In particular, the essay elucidate the multilayered biblical text and various theologies of war existing in the Ancient Testament, re-read after the first crusade’s events to explain the true meaning of Christian triumph. More than hostility against Muslim enemy, the reason of this bloodshed was searched in the Bible like a fulfillment of ancient prophecies. However, the evaluation of this subject is an enlightening hint of overall treatment of “just war approach” elaborated in high-medieval centuries by Occidental Christianity.
