OSSERVAZIONE DI SITI DI RILEVANZA GEOSTORICA ALLE ISOLE SVALBARD CON UAS DI FASCIA “CONSUMER-LEVEL”: DUE CASI DI STUDIO

Observation of geohistorically relevant sites in the Svalbard Islands by “consumer-level” UAS: two cases. Svalbard Islands (Norway) have long been a boundary context at the edge between the inhabited world and the inaccessible spaces of the Arctic. For centuries human beings went into those solitary lands, settling bases and stations in order to survive, conquer or endure a more or less difficult stay. Paradigmatic examples of this story are the 17th-century whaling station at Sallyhamna and the Knospe-Nussbaum German weather station from 1941. These places, like many others, are peculiar “time-capsules” that keep traces of life and death from the past of the Arctic regions. Expedition Polarquest2021 reached both sites and conducted expeditive surveys by drones. Data obtained in these operations could well be useful for monitoring and for further studying that thin, though relevant, cultural heritage.

: Le Isole Svalbard (Norvegia) sono state per lungo tempo un contesto di frontiera tra il mondo abi tato e gli ambienti inaccessibili dell’Artide. Per secoli gli esseri umani hanno percorso quelle lande solitarie e vi hanno insediato basi e stazioni a scopo di sopravvivenza, di conquista o di più o meno difficile permanenza. Emblematici esempi di questa lunga storia sono la seicentesca base di balenieri presso Sallyhamna e la stazione meteorologica Knospe Nussbaum, risalente al 1941. Questi luoghi, come altri, sono singolari “capsule del tempo” che restituiscono tracce della vita e della morte nel passato delle regioni artiche. La spedizione Polarquest2021 ha raggiunto e visitato entrambi i siti, effettuando osservazioni con l’impiego di droni. I dati ottenuti possono costituire documentazione utile allo svolgi mento di monitoraggi e di ulteriori studi su quel tenue, eppure significativo, patrimonio culturale.
