Aerophotogrammetry, 3-D reconstruction and cartographic rendering of landscape by ultralight aircraft survey. A case study at Porto Canale di Paola, Circeo. The Porto Canale di Paola is a Roman, a fossa, channel fitted with port facilities. It was built for commercial purposes in order to connect the Lake of Paola with the Mediterranean sea, by cutting a depression between the end of the coastal dune of Sabaudia and the Circeo Promontory. This structure, subject to serious degradation in recent decades, is the focus of a collaborative research program conducted by the Sapienza “University of Rome”, the National Park of Circeo, the Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio and the European University of Rome. In order to plan protection and conservation of the archaeological area, a wide campaign of photogrammetric surveys was initiated. The investigations allowed for a better understanding of the features in the area and for the identification of individual degradation processes. The first operational step of the program was to create a topographic network in the area. This was achieved by the use of a total station and GPS. The network included about 150 points on the ground; their visibility from the sky was increased through the placement of targets, with a diameter of about 30 cms, in the form of plastic discs painted with high visibility spray color. A flight was then conducted over the area by means of GREAL’s ultralight research plane. The aircraft was fitted with a nadiral digital reflex photocamera and ensured a total imagery- coverage of the studied area. Images and data were later processed to obtain a 3-D model of the Porto Canale and a GIS-compatible georeferenced raster photo-map of the area.
Il Porto Canale di Paola è un canale del tipo a fossa risalente all'età romana, dotato di utenze di tipo portuale. Fu costruito per scopi commerciali al fine di collegare il lago di Paola col Mar Mediterraneo, mediante taglio della depressione compresa fra il termine della duna costiera di Sabaudia e il Promontorio del Circeo. Questa struttura, soggetta a serio degrado negli ultimi decenni, è al centro di un programma di ricerca congiunta fra il Parco Nazionale del Circeo, la Soprintendenza per i Beni Archeologici del Lazio e l'Università Europea di Roma. Allo scopo di programmare la protezione e la conservazione dell'area archeologica, è stata avviata una campagna di rilievi fotogrammetrici. Le indagini hanno condotto a una migliore conoscenza delle caratteristiche dell'area e all'individuazione di specifici processi di degrado in corso. La prima fase operativa del programma è consistita nel creare una rete topografica sull'area in esame, mediante utilizzo di stazione totale e GPS. La rete ha compreso circa 150 punti sul terreno. La loro visibilità dal cielo è stata incrementata col piazzamento di target, del diametro di circa 30 cm, realizzati con dischi di materiale plastico verniciati con tinte ad alta visibilità. E' stato quindi effettuato un volo sull'area, impiegando il ricognitore ultraleggero in dotazione all'Università Europea di Roma. L'aereo disponeva di una fotocamera reflex digitale installata nadiralmente, e la successione dei passaggi ha consentito una completa copertura aerofotografica della zona da studiare. Le immagini sono state successivamente elaborate per ottenere un modello 3-D del Porto Canale e una mappa fotografica in forma di raster GIS georiferito.
